Modern Mirrors

Mirrors have come a long way over the course of the past few centuries. First designed in Germany nearly two hundred years ago, the modern glass mirror — as we know it today — was a notable improvement upon the convex glass mirrors created by Venetian glassmakers.

Although the quality of mirrors has dramatically improved throughout history, one thing remains the same: They’re used not only for pragmatic purposes but also decorative appeal. The benefits of modern decorative wall mirrors are many. At once, they create visual interest, reflect light, and can even make a room feel bigger.

A round or rectangular wall mirror will brighten a room. A dressing table mirror — or a mirror placed atop a vanity — can create an extension of your bathroom. Floor mirrors blur the line between form and function. Whether used in an entryway, living room, or bedroom, these modern home accessories will instantly liven any space.

Types of Mirrors

There are a few different types of mirrors to consider. Keep these styles in mind as you shop decorative pieces for your home. Standing mirrors are usually designed in one of two ways: they lean against a wall, or they feature a stand with legs, allowing them to be positioned away from a wall. This type of mirror varies in shape and size, but most modern floor mirrors are rectangular or oval-shaped with a frame crafted from solid wood, powder-coated steel, or even leather.

As its name suggests, a hanging wall mirror is affixed to the wall. Some styles are designed to be mounted, while others feature a strap by which they are hung. These often showcase unique frames crafted from polished brass or leather, among other materials. Keep in mind, a modern wall mirror is a decorative, statement-making piece. If your interiors skew contemporary, choose a modern round mirror with a rubber frame and strap. Or, for a more traditional aesthetic, select a mirror framed in leather with equestrian-inspired brass buckle details. A modern full-length mirror may be either a standing mirror or a wall mirror. Whether leaned against a wall or mounted, this type is large enough to show the full length of your body. These are an ideal choice for a bedroom. Opt for a rectangular or oval-shaped piece with a solid walnut frame to complement mid-century modern interiors.

Lastly, a table mirror sits atop a surface, such as a bedroom dresser or living room credenza. Although table mirrors are smaller than other types, they can still provide visual interest and reflect light. Ultimately, select a mirror that coincides with your home’s style — and you can be confidant that it will reflect beautifully designed interiors.
